Protecting her young daughter is the most important thing to Poppy, and Thaddeus threatens the false identity she's carefully constructed. With danger around the corner, will the secrets of a scarlet woman lead to their undoing?
-------------
Secrets in Scarlet is a dark, gritty, and sexy full-length romantic suspense set in pre-Victorian working class London. While it is book two in the Rookery Rogues series, it can be read as a stand-alone historical romance.

Setting: April 1832, Spitalfields, LondonSECRETS IN SCARLET is the story of Thaddeus Knight, a gentleman of good breeding who works as a Sergeant for the Metropolitan Police, much to his families chagrin. Poppaea "Poppy" O'Reilly is a fallen woman who had a child out of wedlock and has moved to London to start over and reinvented herself as a widow. She and Thaddeus meet when a young girl is assaulted and stabbed just outside the factory where Poppy works. What follows is an undeniable connection between two misunderstood people, a murder Thaddeus is determined to solve, and a secret Poppy must keep hidden at all costs...
Well, I wish I could say I loved this book because there were definitely things I did like about it, but for some reason it just failed to hold my attention. To be fair though I had a lot going on when I started this story so I probably didn't have the time to devote to it that I should have. I truthfully enjoyed the first book (A Dangerous Invitation) more however, and would highly recommend reading that story before starting on this one since there are definite spoilers if you read them out of order.
As for what I liked about the book; Poppy, Thaddeus, and even Poppy's daughter Moira immediately come to mind. Such well developed, unique, but flawed individuals are very had to come by and I applaud Ms. Monroe for her vivid characters. I also thought the romance between this couple was absolutely lovely and very believable too. I liked the buildup of their relationship and the fact that it didn't revolve around sex (there were two love scenes if I recall correctly and both late in the story) but instead focused more on the emotional aspects and sundry of other little intimacies that drew these two together.
As for my dislikes, I have to admit that the murder mystery wasn't very mysterious and is pretty much cut and dry from the beginning. There was one little bit of information the author threw in that I assume was supposed to be a shocker, but it didn't surprise me one bit. I found this whole part of the story pretty obvious and lacking in suspense. For sure there were a few unexpected twists and one terribly sad incident, but nothing that left my mouth hanging open or was truly unexpected either.
Still, I do like Ms. Monroe's writing and think she has a lot of potential. I only wish her stories were better edited as I noticed probably a few dozen typos which started to annoy me. And since this story takes place in London's East End there are a lot of cant or slang terms, but I was used to that from Book 1 and basically understood them all this time around. So even though I didn't fall in love with this story, I definitely didn't hate it either. The author did a solid job setting up and introducing the characters for the next book in this series also, which I'm really looking forward to and have very high hopes for =)

Secrets in Scarlet The Rookery Rogues Book 2 edition by Erica Monroe Romance eBooks Reviews
Nice story about a policeman, Thaddeus, who is trying to solve a murder and uncover a counterfeiting operation, and ends up falling for Poppy, one of the weavers where he's investigating the owners. Started a little slow but the pace picked up and it became an exciting murder mistery set in London and its rookeries. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to more from this author. I received this book for free, and this is my unbiased, unsolicited review.
I almost stopped reading this book 3 times. the first time I quit reading it but I did not remove it from my kindle. Then I started it again after reading 2 other books. I almost quit again. This book didn't do it for me. But I kept reading, still nothing, I wanted to quit it. But I have read worst, I stuck it out. Now, I am finished the whole book, I am glad I did because, this ended up being a GREAT STORY !! 5 STARS it's hard at 1st but keep reading. it was a interesting book. I Recommend ~ Read It.
I enjoy my historical romance mixed with some suspense and Erica Monroe never fails to deliver that. Her Rookery Rogues series is set on the darker side of Regency London, but is all the richer for their look at the seedy underbelly of London society. This series is far from the crowded ballrooms of London and despite the slums, it's a refreshing change of scenery. This second book can stand alone, but I recommend reading A DANGEROUS INVITATION first.
SECRETS IN SCARLET Thaddeus and Poppy's romance is sweet and endearing and seamlessly evolves with the thriller/mystery plot that had a couple of nice twists in it. If I had to describe Monroe's writing... I'd say ambitious-- and in a good way. She doesn't settle for easy issues or the easy way out of a problem for her characters... she drags them and the reader through hell and back to a thoroughly satisfying ending that leaves you wanting her next story.
Not the usual Regency fare with the Ton. Storyline set in the 1830s rookeries of London. Great characters. Loved Thaddeus, the main character. Poppy a little harder to like but she grew on me. She and Thaddeus were obviously meant for each other. I really appreciate how Ms. Monroe provided such a gritty description of the reality of life for most who lived, worked and survived in the rookeries. I loved how she wove the information about the looms and weavers into the storyline. Great research was done. Some reviewers have complained about the story dragging on but IMO it was perfect. Erica is fast becoming one of my favorite authors.
