On April 22, 1977, Steve Dixon became a police officer in Northern California. It was one of the proudest moments of his life. He promised himself to work hard and become the best cop he could be. It was going to be a great career. Four years later he was ready to quit in disgust. Some of his best friends did quit. In his new book, Police Stories Making One Bit of Difference, Steve will show you what a police career is really like. You'll see the good cops who race to violent calls and put their lives on the line to protect others. And you'll see the bad cops who out of cowardice or laziness will not put themselves at risk to help a citizen or even another cop. And unbelievably, you'll see that some police departments treat their bad cops better than the good ones. So many good cops either quit or just give up and stop doing any kind of proactive police work. But there are a dedicated few who, despite working with lousy teammates and under poor leadership, still go out each day and make a difference in their communities. This book is a tribute to them. Hopefully, after reading it, you will gain a better appreciation for the good cops in your community. As you'll see, it is much easier to be a bad cop than a good one.

Police Stories Making One Bit of Difference Sgt Steve Dixon Books Reviews
Great read and even greater guy, SGT Dixon's outstanding character and devotion to his community and fellow officers is as real and evident in this book as it is in person. This book and my interactions with him have motivated me to become a police officer upon completion of my obligation to the Army and to resolve not to be one of the "slugs" he refers to throughout this account of his time serving in the Santa Clara PD.
I am not in law enforcement, nor do I plan to be, but I loved reading this book. Steve Dixon is a great storyteller and his stories about his career as a police office were exciting, honest and funny. It was great to see these events from the perspective of a police officer and get to know a little bit about how they catch criminals and make arrests.
This book was also an eye opener with important information for any civilian. I think the author did a great job of writing about the many great police officers he worked with as well as those who may not have your best interests at heart.
All in all, this was a very entertaining book and I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about what police officers do each and every day.
This book made me laugh out loud several times, and that's a rarity with any book. It's very easy to read, feels very personal and gives us civilians some interesting insight into what it's like to be on patrol.
The stories are told with a style that makes you feel like you're having a beer with the author, and while many are plain hilarious, several are very sad and disturbing. But they're all worthwhile and I learned a lot from reading this book.
We all know that being a Police Officer is still about the toughest job there is. I'm afraid that in our litigious society filled with a spoiled, 'entitled' public, good Officers find themselves unable to do the job they want to do (and we claim we want them to do). The constraints of City and County lawyers, mixed with the agendas of local politicians, administrators and whiny social groups mean that the days of REAL Police work are about over. What a shame.
The reviewers here (other Officers?) that complain Officer Dixon is being egotistical is puzzling, I didn't see it that way at all. I read it as a good guy who wanted to be a good man and a good cop, and became jaded with the systems and the politics. Who can't relate to that? Like many friends of mine in the military, some consider those who are upset with the system and speak out about it to be traitors or disloyal. I disagree. The folks I know that have gone into Law starry-eyed and wanting to help serve justice go through the same thing. After several years the legal system veneer wears thin and the truth is that often your hands are tied. Disappointment with it when you have made it your life work is inevitable and natural. This must be the same for many Police Officers who enter Law Enforcement. That does not equate with being egotistical or being disloyal.
I recommend this book; it was fun to read and I've lent it out to friends who've also enjoyed it.
This book is an easy read, and entertaining for a few chapters. However, the author's gigantic ego, feeling of self importance, and huge chip on his shoulder wears thin after a while. His memory seems to have faded as his visions of self grandeur have warped the truth in his story telling. Having worked for Santa Clara PD, I can confirm that Steve Dixon was a damn fine cop who knew how to take care of business. However, Santa Clara was full of damn fine cops with the same or better gifts. It is a shame that he chose this avenue to disrespect all of the fine men and women who have served Santa Clara.

Sorry, but this book hit the trash can very quickly. I'm certain the author is a nice man and had a great career, but the self-serving, rather boring stories feature the author pretty much breaking his arm patting himself on the back in each and every chapter.
Regretfully, this book could have been fantastic.
I'm very familiar with both Santa Clara PD and San Jose PD, having been a Bay Area cop for a couple of decades, plus an instructor at the ACSO regional training center for a few years after that. I'm willing to bet my pension that there are a LOT more interesting tales from the south bay blue suits than those reflected in this book.
Good luck staying awake if you buy it.
went to school with the author and it was great to reconnect with him through his book.It was very interesting and I`m sorry but I wouldn`t do that job for anything. The book was great.
I had the pleasure of having Sergeant Dixon instruct at my police academy. From the minute I first heard him speak about his career in our classroom, I could tell he still had a great passion for police work and he was my kind of police officer that I strived to be. Then when I heard he was writing a book about his personal experiences, I couldn't wait for him to finish it. As I read his book, I could just hear his funny wit and visualize his experiences. It was great that he included so much detail in the calls, because I knew just where they were as I live in Santa Clara.
An easy and enjoyable read. I read the whole book in two week because I found myself picking it up every free moment that I had.
A must read for new recruits on what the reality is about police departments in general.
